Dollar General of Ackerman and Weir sponsored toy drives this Christmas season to help make some children’s Christmas brighter. Customers in Ackerman were asked to buy at least a $5.00 dollar toy to have their picture taken with Santa on four different occasions from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday November 27th and 28th ; then again Saturday and Sunday December 19th and 20th. Customers at Dollar General in Ackerman donated four huge bags of toys.
“All the credit goes to our customers and to Orion Turner who played Santa those four days”, said general manager Vicki Groceman
The Weir Dollar General was new to the toy drive this year, but the managed to fill a 50-gallon bag with toys.
“I was pleased with the response from our customers here”, said general manager Shelby Payten. “Next year we will promote it better.”
The toys were taken to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Shreveport, La.
Three Shriners, Chris Nettles-Potentate 2008 Hamasa Shriners of Marion, Miss and member of the Winston Co. Shrine Club, Grover Vining-Potentate 2013 and Shreveport Hospital Board of Governors and Charles “Buck” Ray-Past President of the Winston County Shrine Club, picked up the toy donations Monday, December 21st to be delivered to the Shriner’s Hospital in Shreveport.
Shriners Hospitals for Children have 22 hospitals located in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The hospitals treat children with a variety of health issues in orthopedics; burn care, cleft lip and palate and spinal cord injury.
