First Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest set

Submitted by Jan Ballard, Mississippi State Extension – Choctaw County

Something old can become something new. Choctaw County’s Holiday Open House (sponsored by Mississippi State University Extension and the Choctaw County Library) will include a new contest this year, the 1st Annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest. On December 10th at the Choctaw County Library, in addition to Santa, MSU ice cream to sample, crafts for children, a variety of musical performances, the Christmas tree decorating contest (public may vote for winner), three Mississippi authors, and packing the trailer for the WTVA Food Drive, will be a fun contest for everyone to enjoy.

Judging will begin at 4:00 with participants divided into categories by age: Adults-20+; Teens-13-19; and Youth-12 and under. Awards may be given for such titles as Funniest, Best Homemade (must be hand-knitted or hand-crocheted), and Best Overall. Awards will be given for each category.

Contest Rules
1. To be eligible as an Ugly Christmas Sweater Contestant you must wear a Christmas or winter-themed Sweater, or Sweater Vest. (Sweatshirts, turtlenecks and long or short-sleeved t-shirts will not be accepted. You may wear such items underneath an Ugly Christmas Sweater-vest, but it will not be considered part of your sweater and therefore not eligible for judging.)
2. You may add to or alter your Christmas sweater however you like, have fun and get creative. Additional items such as hats, jewelry or other festive attire will not be considered when voting for the Ugliest Christmas Sweater. An item must be attached to your Christmas sweater in order to be eligible.
3. Sweaters need to be family-friendly, may be purchased or hand-made, and may be constructed out of yarn, or other materials that could be assembled in that manner (thread, plarn [plastic yarn], cut up blankets, etc.)

Holiday Open House is free and opened to the public and will once again be on December 10th at 2:30-6:00 at the Choctaw County Library in Ackerman. Bring your camera and family and friends for a great afternoon. If you have any questions, please call the Choctaw County Extension Office at 662-285-6337.
