From press reports
Do you want to make a difference in Choctaw County? Would you like to leave a legacy? Are you ready to share some of your talents? Do you want to help the future of Mississippi by helping today’s youth?
A program of Mississippi State University Extension Service, 4-H is one of the largest youth development organizations in the state with the 2014 enrollment of 66,361. What began in Mississippi over 100 years ago as corn clubs for boys and tomato clubs for girls (the thinking being that the boys would grow up to be farmers and the girls would be their wives), has developed into areas of veterinary science, performing arts, robotics and technology, entrepreneurship, communications and environmental education…to name a few.
One of the cornerstones for the success of Mississippi’s 4-H program is the 6,620 volunteers who shared their time and talents with our youth this past year. Currently, Choctaw County has approximately 100 young people between the ages of 5-18, who have enrolled for the Fall 2015 programs, with more likely to join. A 4-H volunteer may serve in a number of capacities: some choose to help at an environmental day camp, lead or assist leading a club, while others may chaperone events, lend professional skills, prepare youth for contests, organize fundraising activities, or participate in annual events such as award programs, workshops, open house, or the Christmas Parade. As they provide hands-on guidance and real-world experience, these volunteers also offer young people another crucially important element: a healthy adult role model who helps to build their confidence and encourage their dreams for the future.
Volunteers are specifically needed for: Cloverbuds club leader: (pre 4-H club for 5-8 year olds)
Shooting Sports: rifle and archery coaches (must also attend a 2-day shooting sports certification training)
Interior Design: Assist with project activities Clothing Selection: Assist with project activities
