On Sunday, June 14, 2015, descendants of John and James Weir descended on the town that bears the family name for the annual Weir Family Reunion. While some folks were missing this time, such as those from Colorado and Texas, many out-of-towners made the trip, from elsewhere in the county, from other locations in the state, and from Illinois, Georgia, and Florida.
After a delightful lunch and visiting, the family business meeting began. Noted first were the four family members who had passes away since the last gathering. Those mentioned were Martha Eitson, John Paul Weir, Clyde Poole, and Sarah Ann (Mrs. George) Bennett.
Several minutes were spent “bragging” on the next generation of Weir family members. Grandsons of Carl Weir Townsend both finished Medical School recently, and will begin their residency this month. The surprising fact about these two young men, who were graduated from two different Medical schools, is that both men were recognized by their peers for their attributes, in similar fashion, at their respective schools.
One of Wanda Truxillo’s daughters talked about her “dream job” at Turner Sports, part of Turner Broadcasting in Atlanta. She has quite a career ahead of her, it seems.
Two of the young athletic Weir men have signed football scholarships, one with the Tennessee Volunteers and the other with the Florida Gators.
Howard “Bo” Weir discussed the progress at the Colonel John Weir House, talking about the repairs done earlier this year, the addition of new dark green lattice work covering the lower part of the house, and the new landscaping underway for the front and side yards. Work will continue on the house, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, throughout the summer months.
All said and done, it was another fine reunion for the family that made Weir, by rearing their own families here, as well as their donations of land to the town and churches, and this extended family’s service to the community that bears their name.
