In March, Ms. Sharon James’ Culinary Arts students from the Choctaw County Career and Technology Center competed at the state level in Jackson, MS.
The culinary program had two teams and five individuals to compete in the FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) State Competition. This competition was held over a two day period.
Choctaw county students competed in the following proficiency events: Restaurant Service, Quick Breads, Cake Decorating, and Short Orders. The two Choctaw county competing teams included: Culinary Preparation and Recreation, Hospitality and Tourism.
During the FCCLA Competition/Conference students had the opportunity to attend leadership workshops and participate in the 2015 FCCLA Gala.
On February 20th, Mrs. Kim Thomas and her HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) members traveled to Delta State University to compete in the Northern District Conference. Students competed in a variety of events including: Dental and Medical Terminology, Home Health Aide, Clinical Nursing, Nurse Assisting, Veterinary Science, Human Growth and Development, Dental Science, Medical Photography, Health Care Career Display, Prepared Speaking, and Researched Persuasive Speaking. Fifteen students placed and were able to attend the MS HOSA State Convention in Jackson, MS.
Two students placed at the MS HOSA State Convention, held on March 18-20th, in Jackson, MS. Alex Robison placed 5th in Prepared Speaking, and EmilyFaye Cobb placed 3rd in Researched Persuasive Speaking qualifying her to compete at Nationals held in Anaheim, CA June 22-27th.
Robert Black’s Construction: Carpentry SkillsUSA members recently attended District and State Contests. On February 6th, students traveled to East Central Community College to compete in the District SkillsUSA competition. As a result of District contests, several students qualified to compete during State Contest, which was held in Jackson, MS on March 3rd and 4th. Students competed in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Masonry, and Prepared Speech events. The Masonry Team placed 2nd at the State Competition and the Opening and Closing Team brought home 1st place. The Opening and Closing Team is eligible to compete at the National SkillsUSA competition, which will be held in Louisville, KY on June 23rd – 27th.
Ten of Mrs. Kristy Camp’s CCHS FFA members competed in Federation and District Career Development Events, or contests, hosted at the Choctaw County Career and Technology Center. Federation contest is the first level of competition for FFA members and was held on Friday, February 27, with eight schools present. Central District Contest is the second level of competition also hosted at the Choctaw County Career & Technology Center on Thursday, March 19 with about 200 FFA members competing.
The CCHS FFA Opening and Closing team placed 2nd at Federation and 3rd at District. The Tool Identification team placed 2nd at Federation. Tyler McClain competed in Prepared Public Speaking and placed 1st at Federation and 2nd at District, he will compete in the state competition in June. Austin Dinning competed in National Creed Speaking and placed 2nd at Federation. Addison Horne competed in Senior Creed Speaking and placed 2nd at Federation and 1st at District, she will also compete in the state competition in June.
CCHS FFA members competed at the State Level competition on Friday, March 27th at Mississippi State University. Choctaw County had students competing on both the Floriculture Team and the Milk Quality and Products Team.
Students work hard to prepare for these events and as FFA members benefit from many FFA opportunities.
Mr. Dudley Vance’s Choctaw County FFA had a Welding team competing in Federation Contest as well as a Tractor Driving team that placed 1st in Federation and 3rd at District level competition.
This is a great accomplishment and these competing students are to be commended for their hard work in preparing for contests. Congratulations and good luck to the students that have yet to compete at State level, and Congratulations and good luck to those who look to compete at Nationals!
