Holy Week will begin and end with two opportunities for people throughout the Golden Triangle area to hear Bishop James Swanson of the Mississippi Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Beginning with Palm Sunday, Bishop Swanson will speak at the 11 a.m. worship services March 29 at First Unity United Methodist Church in Weir. And on Easter Sunday, the Bishop will be speaking at the 8:45 and 11 a.m. services at Columbus’ First United Methodist Church. The public is invited to attend services at both churches.
“We are so excited that Bishop Swanson will preach (in the Starkville District) on Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday,” said Dr. Embra Jackson, superintendent of the Starkville District of the Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church. “Bishop Swanson is a dynamic preacher and I know that we will be blessed by his messages. We invite everyone to come and hear this great man of God at one of these services.”
Jackson said having Bishop Swanson preach in the Golden Triangle area at this special time of year continues a tradition began last year when the Bishop preached a powerful message at Griffin UMC in Starkville.
Jackson said it is also interesting to note that Bishop Swanson is preaching at two of the Starkville District’s most dynamic churches, led by two great senior pastors. Rev. Lyndon Geeter is the pastor at First Unity UMC in Weir and Rev. Raigan Miskelly is the senior pastor at Columbus First UMC.
Rev. Geeter of First Unity UMC in Weir said this may be a historic moment for the Weir Charge.
“I believe this is the first time a sitting Bishop has preached in the Weir Charge,” Geeter said. “It is very exciting. We are looking forward to the Bishop doing what he does, the way he does it best and seeing the Holy Ghost move in our church.”
Rev. Miskelly of First UMC Columbus said the church is thrilled to have Bishop Swanson joining them on Easter Sunday.
“We are excited to celebrate this High Holy Day with magnificent worship, terrific preaching, and the gift of God’s Spirit as our companion and guide,” Miskelly said. “We invite everyone to attend as we celebrate that Christ is Risen….for Christ is Risen indeed!”
