Carlin West drove in the winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a 3-3 tie and push the homestanding Lady Panthers to a 4-3 slow-pitch softball win over Winona on Thursday.
The 1-3 FCA squad was set to visit Louisville on Monday, before hosting Coffeeville on Friday at 5:30 p.m. for varsity action. The Lady Panthers will then host Noxapater on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
“Our defense really stepped up and played well,” said FCA head softball coach Sarah Skidmore of the win over Winona. “Skylar Busbea did a great job on defense for us, while Carlin (West) and Brookelyn Box were our key hitters. It was just a fight all the way through.”
The game was tied 1-1 after one inning of play, before French Camp picked up two in the second. Winona scored two in the top of the fourth, before FCA scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the inning.
The Lady Panthers dropped a 15-8 decision to a hot-hitting Noxapater squad last Tuesday.
“Noxapater just did an an amazing job hitting in that game,” Skidmore said. “We just had too many errors, but we are improving in that area.”
West blasted a homer for FCA against Noxapater, while Lucy Oakes ripped a double. Oakes will be out of the line-up for awhile due to a fractured ankle she suffered during the Noxapater game.
