The women of Choctaw County have found a new, useful way to spend their leisure time. It’s not often you see an organized women’s league but they came together and made it happen.
Casey Brasher Orr and a few friends would go to the city park to play a friendly game of softball and that is when the idea came about.
“It started just by us coming (to the park) with our kids during the summer,” said Orr, the organizer of the league. “I then came up with the idea that it would be fun to get the ladies to do something, so I asked if anyone would be interested in doing a softball league and Will Hollis helped me and we got it together. We had a good turn out this year and hopefully next year we will have an even bigger turn out.”
Most women in the area did not have many organized athletic options before the league was developed. Many of them were excited because it got them out of the house and kept them active.
“I’m happy that Choctaw County started something like (The Women’s Softball League),” said Amanda McGinnis, a member of the league. “We didn’t have anything for women of our age; it gave us something to do and a lot of our kids are around the same age so they were able to come and play with each other.”
Hollis was a big contriibutor to helping bring the league together. He made arrangements for the jerseys, put the draft together for the coaches, received the permission from the city to use the fields and put the schedules together.
The league recently closed out with a season-ending tournament with a total of five teams. The games were played on July 29, 31 and Aug. 1. The winner of the tournament was Neon Yellow, while Neon Pink was sec on and Lagoon Blue third.
They plan to continue the league next year and add more competition.
“We hope to maybe get some women from the surrounding area and just have it bigger and hopefully travel some instead of playing just in Ackerman,” Orr said.
Any ladies who are 16 and older and would like to get involved can contact Orr at 662-285-8936 or Hollis at 662-285-7376. There is a registration fee of $30 and it covers jerseys, softballs for each team and park use.
