Youth football, which seeks to provide team building skills for children of various ages, is a growing trend in Choctaw County.
The Choctaw County Youth Football League, which is in its first year, will have a flag football league for first and second graders and tackle for third through sixth graders. The mission of the league is to enable young people to benefit from participation in team sports and activities in a safe and structured environment.
“I think it is important for kids (at a young age) to be part of something physical in our community,” said Lance Thomas, Choctaw County seventh grade football coach and league director. “What other team sport options do our kids have if they are not playing summer league baseball? Football will teach them a lot, if they learn to play it properly. Teaching them how to play the game right is going to be our biggest thing and when I say right, I am (referring) to the fundamentals.”
The league includes other local teams from the surrounding area including Eupora, Pontotoc, Vardaman, Calhoun City and Houston. A jamboree, which is scheduled for the last weekend in August, will serve as the preseason games. The official season opener kicks off on the Saturday after Labor Day (Sept. 6). An official schedule will be set at a later date.
All home games will be held at the CCHS baseball fields and are scheduled to be played on Saturdays, with one possible Thursday date.
Registration will be held July 24-25 at Glasgow City Park in Ackerman. For any questions concerning the Youth Football League contact Thomas at 662-934-8547.
