The Choctaw County School Board approved the 2014-2015 budget in a special meeting on June 24.
District 2 School Board Member Clint Huffman was absent from this meeting.
District 5 School Board Member Mike Thomas, also board president, stepped out of the room for the budget discussion. He is not allowed to vote on the budget due to his daughter-in-law being an employee of the school district.
District 3 School Board Member Linda McDaniel made the motion to approve the budget with a second from District 4 School Board Member Laura Gibbs. It was approved with no discussion in this meeting. Thomas came back into the board meeting.
A budget hearing was held on June 17 where Superintendent Glen Beard explained major parts of the budget. He explained that the school district is not asking for an increase in ad valorem taxes this year.
Mike Hughes, with Weaver Insurance, presented the board their property and casualty insurance renewal quotes. The policy quote from Liberty Mutual totaled $209,886 that is $3,186 cheaper than the current policy. Hughes also presented a quote from the Mississippi School Board Association for the same insurance with a $215,861 premium.
Hughes and the School Board discussed the differences between policies and whether or not to take a risk of joining the Miss. School Board Association’s insurance trust.
Hughes recommended the board approve the Liberty Mutual policy. After more discussion, the board approved the Liberty Mutual insurance quote and the immediate payment.
The board and Kenny Clark, business manager, then discussed whether or not to take the terrorism policy. Hughes explained the terrorism policy while the board debated on whether or not to chance not having the policy.
They finally approved to add the terrorism insurance policy for $762.
Also in the June 24 meeting, the board approved the consent agenda.
In the consent agenda, the board approved:
- Recommendation of Brooke Bibel as Special Education Teacher at FCE pending fingerprint, background and verification of prior experience.
- Recommendation of Ms. Huffman concerning a summer worker.
- Recommendation of Tyler Cole as a summer worker at CCCTC.
The next regularly scheduled School Board meeting will be Monday, July 14 at 7 p.m. at Central Office in Ackerman. The board meets the second Monday of each month.
