Approval of the 2014-2015 school calendar was up for discussion during the Choctaw County School Board meeting on April 14.
Superintendent Glen Beard presented two different calendars for the board to consider. The first calendar had teachers beginning school on July 31 and the second calendar had teachers beginning on August 4.
Beard, the board and all principals discussed options of both calendars. After a poll of the principals and more discussion, the board approved the school calendar that has teachers beginning on August 4. The vote was 4-1 with School Board Member Clint Huffman voting against the calendar.
Superintendent Beard explains the approved school calendar.
“The school calendar this year falls into a bit of an awkward place, due to where some of the holidays fall. By law, students must attend 180 days and teachers 187 days. Next year the school calendar will be basically the same as this year with the exception of two teacher professional development days. Those two days will fall at the end of the school year in May. This will allow teachers to have the start date of August 4 and students will begin August 7. The teachers will have the opportunity this summer to attend two days of training in July to count as the two professional development days that fall in May,” said Beard.
Also during the April 14 meeting, the School Board recognized the Administrator of the Year and the Parents of the year for the Choctaw County School District.
The Administrator of the Year is Ronda Huffman, director of the Choctaw County Career and Technology Center.
Parents of the Year are: Ackerman Elementary-Kristin Hollis, French Camp Elementary-Jennifer Black, Choctaw County High-Angie Stevenson and Weir Elementary-Delois Truss.
The District Parent of the Year is Angie Stevenson.
Under the discussion portion of the agenda, the board approved the financial reports.
The board also approved the renewal of the Employees Legal Liability insurance policy for $20,000 as presented by Mike Hughes with Weaver Insurance. The approval also included the immediate payment of the premium.
The School Board moved the discussion and approval of pay scales and faculty and staff recommendations to the end of their meeting to discuss this in executive session.
After the meeting, Beard said the board discussed personnel in executive session.
“As many know the teachers received a pay increase from the state however that did not include non-certified personnel, like assistant teachers, cafeteria workers, janitors, bus drivers, and secretaries. I presented new pay scales to show a 3 percent pay increase to address those that weren’t included by the state pay raise. The recommendations and pay scales were approved with a vote of 5-0,” said Beard.
