The community is in shock over the loss of a 17-year-old from Ackerman that was killed in a car accident.
Corey D. McPherson, 17, of Ackerman, died in a one-car accident on April 6, 2014.
Choctaw County Sheriff Cloyd Halford said heir Sheriff’s Department received the call at 6:58 a.m. and officers arrived on scene at 7:21 a.m. near the 1900 block of Chaney Road in Ackerman. An ambulance and fire department were also dispatched to the scene.
Halford said the white 2005 Toyota pickup truck, driven by McPherson, left the road and struck a tree. No other details of the accident are being released. He said the accident is still under investigation.
Monday, April 7 was a quiet day at Choctaw County High School were McPherson was a 10th grade student. He played football for the Choctaw County Chargers since the 7th grade.
CCHS Principal Shane Burton said they had counselors, from across the district, at school for anyone that wished to talk to them.
In honor of Corey, CCHS students and faculty wore orange and orange ribbons, since that was his favorite color.
Also on Monday, Burton said they hung up white paper around school so that students could express their emotions and write messages to the McPherson family.
“This is a tragedy. We are all going to miss Corey. It will just take the kids a little time,” said Burton.
CCHS students and faculty also plan to take up donations for the family.
Visitation was held Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 5 p.m. at the Choctaw County High School Auditorium (Ty Cobb Complex). The funeral is today, Wednesday, April 9 at 4 p.m. at the CCHS Auditorium (Ty Cobb Complex).
