Lady Bulldogs limit Coahoma to one hit in doubleheader sweep

Holmes Community College freshman pitcher Brett Whitlock threw a no-hitter in game two and sophomore Katie Johnston threw a one-hitter in game one to help lead the Lady Bulldogs to two huge division wins over Coahoma, 16-0 and 12-0, on Sunday

With the wins, the Lady Bulldogs went to 14-15 and 9-5 in the North Division. Holmes was set to Eunice, La. Tuesday to play LSU-Eunice in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and then travel to Scooba on Saturday in a noon doubleheader.

In game one in the 12-0 win, Johnston threw four innings and struck out five, walked none and gave up only a single. Michelle Gregory led the Lady Bulldogs with a two-run homer and a double. Samantha Meadows added two hits including a double. Charneissa Gordon added a two-run homer.

In game two in the 16-0 win, Whitlock threw three innings and struck out three and walked none. Gordon led the Lady Bulldogs with two hits including a double. Meadows and Katherine Pennington also added a double.

Some last inning heroics helped the Holmes Community College Lady Bulldog softball team gain a split last Tuesday with the Northeast Mississippi Community College Lady Tigers. Holmes won game one, 3-2, in eight innings and fell in game to 4-2.

In game one, Keana Wash got a big hit to score Karina Brown to tie the game at 2-2 after Northeast had taken a 2-1 lead into the top of the eighth. Gregory then got a hit to score Wash from second base.

Johnston picked up the complete game win. She gave up two runs on eight hits and struck out three. Wash and Brown each led the Lady Bulldogs with two hits in the game.

In game two, Whitlock pitched seven innings. She gave up four runs on 10 hits and struck out two. Gordon led the Lady Bulldogs with two hits including a double.


The Holmes Community College Bulldogs picked up two road wins against the Louisiana College junior varsity, winning both games 4-2.

With the win, the Bulldogs go to 19-9 overall. Holmes was set to host Mississippi Delta for a MOnday doubleheader, then they were scheduled to play Coahoma on Tuesday at home in doubleheader and host East Mississippi in a 2/4:30 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.

Jared Bailey picked up the win in game one. He pitched 2.1 innings and gave up two hits and struck out three. Brister Dupont, Chase Chancellor and Deion Ulmer also pitched with Ulmer picking up the save. He went one inning striking out two. Jaylan Bledsoe led the Bulldogs with two hits including a double.

In game two, J.P. Zeigler picked up the win. He went four innings and gave up one run on two hits struck out three and walked two. Hunter Bull and Jason Hursey also pitched with Hursey picking up the save. He went 2 1/3 innings striking out two and walking one. Clyde Kendrick, Kevin Barber and Chad McNeil each had two hits. Barber tripled while Kendrick and Ulmer each doubled.
