The Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce, K&M Portables, LLC, Farm Bureau Insurance, U.S. Forest Service and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks are partnering together to host a kids fishing rodeo at Choctaw Lake on Saturday, April 12.
All children in the county ages 15 and under are invited to fish. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. under the pavilion in the campground area. A parent or guardian must attend with the child participating to sign a release waiver. Opening ceremonies will begin at 8:45 a.m. with fishing from 9 -11 a.m. Farm Bureau Insurance will provide lunch for all of the kids.
The fishing rodeo will be held at Choctaw Lake below Cabin Lake, the smaller lake on the left when entering the campground sites at Choctaw Lake recreation area. Children are encouraged to bring their own pole, bait and stringer for fishing. There will be catfish with a color tag placed in the lake. The children who catch a tagged fish will receive a door prize.
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks hosts fishing rodeos throughout the state. In 2013 a total of 57 rodeos were hosted in Mississippi with 7,000 youth participating.
“What a great event to have at Choctaw Lake! The Forest Service is excited to partner and host this great event that encourages children to have fun outdoors,” said Bobby Claybrook, program manager for the Tombigbee Recreational District.
“The Chamber of Commerce is proud to partner and host the Kids Fishing Rodeo to encourage use of our county’s natural resources,” stated Steve Anderson, Chamber of Commerce Director. “Seeing the smiles and excitement of the kids catching fish, many for the first time, is delightful. The opportunity to expose the kids and their parents to such a beautiful natural resource that we have in Choctaw County is very satisfying and the Chamber of commerce is pleased to be a part of that experience.”
Volunteers are needed for the day of the event with logistics and to fish with the children. Door prizes related to fishing and to promote the outdoors are being sought to award the children who catch a tagged fish. If you would like to help volunteer or donate a door prize for this event, please contact the Chamber of Commerce office at 662-285-3778.
