Shanks inducted into Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities

Victoria Shanks of Ackerman was inducted into the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges on January 31, 2014 at The University of Mississippi Oxford campus.

Shanks was nominated for the honor by professors and the nominating committee at the University of Mississippi. School officials point out that only 1 percent of the entire Ole Miss Student body is selected for the honor. Of the 151 inducted, Shanks was 1 of only 10 engineering majors, and the only Electrical Engineering student selected.

According to the Who’s Who organization’s statement, “Over the past years, the Who’s Who program has honored and rewarded the individual scholastic excellence of outstanding campus leaders. The award is one of the greatest honors given annually by the American academic community.”

Shanks is a 2010 graduate of Ackerman High School. She is the daughter of Wayne and Niecy Shanks and the granddaughter of Jack and Etoyle Bowman of Ackerman.

This May, Shanks will graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in Bio-Medicine.

While attending The University of Mississippi, Shanks participated in the University of Mississippi “Pride of the South” Marching Band and Color Guard, Baptist Student Union and was a teacher’s assistant for the University’s Psychology Department.

Honor organization and memberships include: Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Lambda Delta Honor Society, Phi Mu Sorority-Alpha Delta Chapter, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and Society of Women Engineers (SWE). Shanks served as a fundraiser for LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, St. Jude’s Children Hospital, Children’s Miracle Network, March of Dimes and Operation Christmas Child. Nominations include: Hall of Fame, Senior Maid, Campus Favorite, and runner-up for Engineering Student Body Vice President.

Shanks actively volunteers for More Than a Meal Campaign, Oxford Food Drive, Boys and Girls Club, Ole Miss Big Event, School of Engineering Catapult Competition, Adopt-a-Grandparent-Oxford Nursing Home and Oxford Humane Society just to name a few.

Shanks is a recipient of the Academic Excellence Scholarship, Longstreet Scholarship, Brevard Engineering Scholarship and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Scholarship.
