After much discussion, the Choctaw County Board of Supervisors approved to hire the Horne Group to perform the required Miss. Code 41-13-15 (8) hospital study.
The board met in a quick meeting February 12 to approve the professional services contract for the required hospital study.
Chris McIntire, board president, said he talked with Watkins, Ward and Stafford about performing the study for the county. He said WW&S would not be able to begin the study until April.
“We can’t wait that long,” said McIntire beginning the discussion on the contract with the Horne Group.
It will cost approximately $25,000 for the Horne Group to do the required study.
The supervisors approved to hire the Horne Group to do the study.
Just two days before, in the February 10 board meeting, the supervisors were unclear whether or not to proceed with the required hospital study or not.
Steve Wright, county board attorney, said the state law is unclear whether Choctaw County is required to have the study done or not because the county is under a lease with a for profit hospital.
Wright recommended the board two options.
“My advice to you is one of two things. Comply with the 41-13 or write to the AG (Attorney’s General) for an opinion,” said Wright.
He added that complying with Miss. Code 41-13-15 would leave no doubt of doing what is required. Writing for an AG opinion, to ask of the county is required to do the study, make take a month or longer to get an answer.
“I’d hang my hat on the safe side and do the 41-13. That’s my opinion,” said McIntire.
District 1 Supervisors Archie Collins agreed on having the study done since it would be on a new facility.
