Jessie Bell Dobbs Cornish, 94, went home to be with her Lord on January 29, 2014. She was born in Choctaw County on November 12, 1919 to Silas Mercer Dobbs and Nannie Bell Gammill Dobbs.
Mrs. Cornish was devoted to her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Cornish in 1994. She is survived by one son, Carroll Cornish, Jr., and wife, Charlotte, of Ackerman; two grandchildren: Kim Cornish Pugh and husband, Adam, of Oxford, Mississippi and Charlie Cornish and wife, Heather, of Athens, Georgia; and six great grandchildren: Zach, Andrew, and Claire Anne Pugh; Ben, Jack, and Caroline Cornish.
Mrs. Cornish was a lifelong member of Ackerman Baptist Church. She enjoyed working and served as Executive Secretary at Belwood for many years. Later, she worked in the office at the U.S. Forestry Service as part of the Senior Americans Program. She also enjoyed working in her yard and especially enjoyed cooking. Many enjoyed fried apple pies or a loaf of banana nut bread from her kitchen. Mrs. Cornish is described by a friend as being “a special Southern lady – so witty, fun – always a joy to be around.”
Services were held at Ackerman Baptist Church at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 1, 2014, with Reverend Danny Irvin officiating. Interment followed at Enon Cemetery. Crystal Boggan Atkinson, Chris Jenkins, and Brenda Lucas provided beautiful music for the service. Pallbearers were Perry King, Bo Newman, Don Porter, Bob Power, Ralph Skinner, and Mike Thomas.
