Holmes men take big win over Itawamba CC

The Holmes Community College men’s basketball team held an eight point lead at halftime and went on to defeat the Itawamba Community College Indians, 75-60.

With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 11-9 overall and 3-6 in the North Division. Holmes was st to play Northeast on Monday night in Booneville and then will host Northwest on Thursday night. The Bulldogs still have 6:19 left of the division game at Scooba left with East Mississippi. It still hasn’t been decided if the remainder of the game will be made up yet.

The Bulldogs led 37-29 at halftime and then outscored Itawamba down the stretch 38-31 to pull out the win. Travis Johnson led the Bulldogs with 17 points while Dayshawn Watkins had 15, Tamarico Wilson had 13 and Marcus Washington had 11. Wilson led the Bulldogs with eight rebounds while Washington had six.

The visiting Itawamba Community College Lady Indians led the Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs by 12 at halftime and then outscored the Lady Bulldogs 37-32 in the second half for the 66-49 win. With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs fell to 6-15 overall and 3-7 in the North Division. Itawamba led Holmes 29-17 at halftime and kept the Lady Bulldogs from making a comeback in the second half. Carmesha Nalls led the Lady Bulldogs with 22 points while Tayanna Purnell had 10. Purnell led the Lady Bulldogs with 12 rebounds while Taylor Johnson had 10.


The Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs split two games at Hinds Community College on Saturday with the Lady Bulldogs winning game one 3-2 and falling 8-7 in game two.

The Lady Bulldogs went to 2-4 overall. Holmes was set to  Copiah-Lincoln on Monday and East Central on Wednesday. Holmes then travels to Booneville on Saturday to participate in the TigerFest Tournament. Holmes plays Lincoln Land, John A. Logan and Jefferson with the games beginning at 11:30 a.m.

In game one at Hinds, Katie Johnston picked up the win pitching the entire seven innings. She gave up two runs on seven hits striking out four and walking one. Katherine Pennington, Keana Wash, Charneissa Gordon and Michelle Gregory each had two hits with Gordon and Taylor Jordan having a double in the game.

In game two at Hinds, Johnston suffered the loss after only pitching 2/3 of an inning. Brett Whitlock pitched four innings and Faye Lott pitched a 1 1/3 innings. Pennington led the Lady Bulldogs with three hits while Wash had two with one of Pennington’s hits being a double.
