The Holmes Community College men’s basketball team returned to MACJC North Division action this week by hosting Coahoma Community College on Monday, before then traveling to Itawamba on Thursday.
The Bulldogs were 8-3 overall headed into the week’s action and 1-0 in North Division play.
HCC dropped an 87-81 loss to Southwest Mississippi on Thursday, but took an 86-62 home win over Hinds last Monday.
Southwest jumped out to a 22-12 lead early in the contest but the Bulldogs mounted a comeback. Holmes tied the game at 27 and took as much as a three-point lead before Southwest retook the lead at halftime, 45-44. As the horn sounded at halftime, Jarvis Williams launched a shot from just inside half court to pull Holmes within one point.
A Patrick Banks’ dunk with 17:25 gave Holmes the first lead of the second half. Southwest then retook the lead and held the lead until 13:21 when Marcus Washington tied the game for Holmes once again. Southwest retook the lead with 10:59 to play and held it until 6:20 to play when Washington tied the game once again at 69. Southwest took the lead again but another Banks dunk with 3:55 tied the game again, this time at 75. Southwest then took the lead with 2:45 left and held off the Bulldogs from that point.
Tamarico Wilson led the Bulldogs with 16 points while Jarvis Williams and Dayshawn Watkins each had 14.
In the win over Hinds, Holmes jumped out early and never looked back, holding a 14-point lead at halftime, 36-22 and increased the lead to 30 at 82-52 with four minutes to play.
The Holmes Bulldogs had five players in double figures. Justin McCleary led the Bulldogs with 20 points including five three-pointers while Iury Dixon had 16 points with three three-pointers and Tamarico Wilson, Jarvis Williams and Dayshawn Watkins each had 11.
The Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs defeated the Hinds Community College Lady Bulldogs, 67-58,.
Hinds jumped out in the first half and held as much as 10 point lead and lead at halftime, 33-31. Holmes then outscored Hinds 36-25 in the second half to pull out the win.
Brandi Carter led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points while Carmesha Nalls had 13 and Taylor Johnson had 12. Laricka Morgan pulled down 12 rebounds and Tayanna Purnell had six.
The Southwest Mississippi Community College Lady Bears jumped out to a 20-point lead at halftime and went on to defeat the Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs 61-25 on Thursday night
With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs fell to 3-9 on the season. Southwest led 39-19 at halftime.
Brandi Carter led the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points while LaShonda Wilson led the Lady Bulldogs in rebounding with 10.
