Aldermen approve to accept debit cards

In the first meeting of 2014, the Ackerman Board of Aldermen approved to begin accepting debit/credit cards at Town Hall.

Keith Taylor with Alpha Omega Processing made a presentation to the board in their January 6 meeting. He stated that Alpha Omega Processing could provide the needed software, card swipe and more to the town at no cost.

The customer is charged a three percent fee for using the debit/credit card.

Taylor recently made a similar presentation to the Choctaw County Board of Supervisors. They approved to a contract with Alpha Omega to begin accepting debit cards.

Before taking a vote on whether or not to approve a contract with Alpha Omega Processing for processing credit/debit cards, Ward 2 Alderman Tommy Curtis left the room. Taylor is Curtis’ nephew. The board approved a contract with Alpha Omega Processing in a 3-0 vote. Curtis then came back into the room.

Also, in the January 7 meeting, the aldermen, mayor and Mike Brasher, Public Works director, discussed adding six water meters to a neighborhood of mobile homes behind the Bellwood building off of Highway 15 in Ackerman.

Brasher said there are six mobile homes behind the Bellwood building operating off of two water meters. He requested adding six water meters to existing water lines to add those extra customers. Brasher said the town would need to charge all six customers a tap fee and meter deposit. The board approved to go ahead with the project.

On a different matter, the board approved to purchase one 65-foot electric pole at approximately $800 to be installed at the baseball field. This town will use a portion of the $5,000 the Choctaw County School District pays the town for usage of the baseball field to purchase the pole.

This pole will be in addition to three 65 foot poles the CCSD will take down from the Weir school baseball field, along with lights, and install at the town’s baseball field to improve lighting at the field.

The Ackerman Board of Aldermen approved:

-To amend the agenda to add Kevin Taylor with Alpha Omega Processing.

-To table issue of cutting timber on town owned land on Triplett Road and near the Choctaw County Community Center. The board received a quote to clear-cut both areas but decided to table it after recommendation from Mayor Dick Cain.

-To appoint an airport board after a brief discussion. The county previously appointed the same people as the airport board. The board is the same as the Choctaw County Economic Development District board.

-Policy and Procedures manual for the Ackerman Police Department as requested by Chief Kevin Stark.

-Sample, Hicks and Associates as administrator for the 2014 CDBG grant.

-Calvert Spradling as engineer for the 2014 CDBG grant.

-Travel for Mayor Dick Cain to the 2014 Mid Winter Legislative Conference in Jackson on January 28-30.

-To purchase two sets of new turnouts for the Ackerman Fire Department at approximately $1,300 each.

Ward 1 Alderman Willie Miller was absent from this meeting. The next regularly scheduled Board of Aldermen meeting will be February 4 at 6 p.m. at the boardroom at Town Hall.
