Grace Christian Eagles look to return to winning ways

The Grace Christian School Eagles were looking to snap a four-game losing streak as they played host to Nanih Waiya High School on Monday. The Game with the Warriors will be the last of the first semester for GCS, which will return to action on Jan. 7 when it pays a visit to Nanih Waiya at 6 p.m.

Grace Christian, which began the season at 4-0, recently dropped contests to Hebron Christian (76-23), Ethel (71-30), and Diamond Grove (71-57).

Hebron jumped out to a 17-0 first-quarter lead in the Dec. 3 contest against Grace Christian on the way to the big win. Lucas Borntrager scored 14 points for GCS, while Daniel Halfacre scored four points, Dalton Hartness hit for three and Landon Weeks and Landon Christopher scored two each.

Two days later the Eagles fell behind Ethel 44-16 at the half, as the Tigers then held on for the victory. Borntrager picked up 11 points to lead Grace Christian, while Michael Fuller tossed in six and Hartness, Nick Hogue and Alex Taylor picked up three each. Christopher and Collin Mills also scored two apiece for Grace.

Grace Christian’s Dec. 9 game with Tupelo Christian Academy was postponed due to bad weather, but the Eagles added a Dec. 12 contest against Diamond Grove.

The game was tight early as Diamond Grove led 21-19 after one quarter of play and 37-35 a the half. Diamond Grove outscored GCS 17-7 in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Borntrager pumped in 29 points for Grace Christian in the game, while Hartness hit for 13, Halfacre eight, Hogue six and Fuller three.

The Grace Christian junior varsity team has had a successful season so far, beginning the year at 5-0.
