The Choctaw County School District recently received the Lantern Award from the Mississippi School Board Association.

This award is given for outstanding student achievement, based on student performance on last spring’s testing in the Mississippi accountability program.

“Receiving this award is a real testatment to the job our teachers and students are doing,” said Superintendent Glen Beard.

The CCSD is one of 31 schools in the state of Mississippi to receive this honor. This is the second year in a row that the district has received his award.

“To receive this award is a real honor but to receive it two years in a row is an absolute joy. It shows our district has consistency which is important in moving our district in the right direction,” said Beard.

The Lantern Award is part of the MSBA Lighthouse School Leader Awards Program. “This program was established by the Mississippi School Boards Association at the beginning of the 2003-04 school year, in recognition of the unsung efforts of school districts to meet more rigorous state and federal accountability standards,” says the MSBA.

There are three awards categories:

-Beacon where districts earn a letter grade A under the Mississippi Department of Education’s Accountability Standards. This year 19 schools received this honor.

-Lantern where districts earn a letter grade B under the Mississippi Department of Education’s Accountability Standards. This year 31 schools received this honor.

-Torch districts earn a letter grade C under the Mississippi Department of Education’s Accountability Standards and have 90 percent or more district students participate in the federal free/reduced lunch program, no school graded below “C” and at least one school is graded “B” or above. One school received this honor this year.

“The mark of student success continues to rise, and Mississippi school districts have a proven track record of providing leadership to achieve, and even exceed, the standards,” said MSBA Executive Director Michael W. Waldrop.

“The MSBA Lighthouse School Leader Awards Program is our way of cheering school leaders on as they persist on the path of increasingly higher student achievement for all students,” said Waldrop in a press release about the MSBA Lighthouse School Leader Awards Program.
