The French Camp Academy girls basketball team overcame a good case of first-half butterflies on Saturday afternoon to post a convincing 51-29 win over Winona in the Ethel Classic.
The Lady Panthers held a 16-11 lead at the half in their season-opener, but really turned it on over the final 16 minutes of the game to move to 1-0 on the season.
“I guess we had the jitters in the first half,” said FCA head coach Martha Ward. “We looked a little nervous. But we played better in the second half and did a good job overall.”
Junior post Suna Kuac had a big game for the winners, tossing in 21 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Anna Grace MacKenzie scored 12 points for FCA, while Myesha Scott had seven points and 12 rebounds and Widan Toto claimed 10 boards.
“Once the game got going, we began to calm down a little bit and made a few baskets,” Ward said.
The Lady Panthers were set to host Philadelphia on Tuesday and will visit Nanih Waiya on Thursday and then travel to Philadelphia on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Due to the MHSAA Class 1A High School football playoffs and the Thanksgiving holidays, the FCA boys team is not likely to begin play until the Charger Tournament at Choctaw County High School in Ackerman Dec. 12-14.
