Holmes takes win in last game of regular season

The Holmes Community College Bulldogs ended the regular season by winning its last three out of five games after defeating Coahoma Community College here, 48-21.

The Bulldogs piled up 500 yards of offense with over 400 coming on the ground. Bulldog freshman quarterback Jamario Benson led the Bulldogs with six carries for 156 yards and two touchdowns while sophomore running back Fred Franklin had 28 carries for 148 yards and two touchdowns.

Holmes got on the scoreboard first in the game when Ryhean McMorris intercepted Coahoma and returned the ball 18 yards for a touchdown with 5:51 left in the first quarter. Cole Ballard’s extra point put the Bulldogs up 7-0.

Less than two minutes later, the Bulldogs added their second score of the night when Benson scampered in from 60 yards out. Ballard added the extra point to go up 14-0.

Holmes went up 21-0 with 13:51 left in the first half when Franklin scored from 12 yards out. Ballard’s PAT was good.

Coahoma then got on the scoreboard with 10:31 left in the second quarter on a two-yard pass. Cody Spears PAT made the score 21-7.

Coahoma then scored with 2:04 left before the half to bring the score to within seven at 21-14.

The Bulldogs increased the lead at 27-14 just before halftime with four seconds to play when James Ayers scored from a yard out. Ballard’s PAT was no good, and the Bulldogs led 27-14 at halftime.

Coahoma creeped back to 27-21 when the Tigers scored on a five yard pass. Spears PAT was good with 7:29 left in the third.

Holmes added another touchdown in the third quarter with 3:54 when Nick Glover scored from 42 yards out on a fake punt. Ballard’s PAT was good.

Benson then scored again in the fourth quarter from 31 yards out. Ballard’s PAT was good to make the score 41-21 with 10:32 left in the game.

Franklin added his second touchdown from four yards out with 6:25 left in the game. Ballard’s PAT was good to end the scoring there.

Dantavious Washington led the Bulldog defense with 10 solo tackles while Traver Jung had eight solos and two assists and Jammie Jamison had eight solos and one assist.
