The Twentieth Century Club of Ackerman met Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Choctaw County Library with eight members present. Refreshments were served by Susan Shurden, hostess, for the evening.
In the absence of the secretary, Ginny Lucas read the minutes from the August meeting. Correspondence was received from Lara Bowman from the Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce expressing thanks for the club participation and volunteering for the Back to School Movie Night at the Tom Glasgow Park. Treasurer Johnie Power gave the treasury report. The Club voted to cover expenses for Veterans cards to be made. The Club also voted to donate $100 to the PAWS to Support the Choctaw County Animal Shelter fundraiser. They will also donate food items and volunteer time for this event which will take place on Saturday, November 2nd from 9am-4pm at Enon CP Lighthouse Center.
Membership Chairman, Ginny Lucas, passed out new club bags to members who didn’t have one. She also announced that a membership emphasis-tailgate meeting is planned for the October meeting. Members are encouraged to invite a friend, wear their favorite team attire, and bring a tailgate dish to the October meeting. Marina Loper won the Membership prize.
Fundraising Chairman Tinker Forrester took up Innisbrook orders, announced that she already has five vendors signed up for the Christmas Brunch event, and had members sign up for table themes for the brunch. Tinker also had members draw names for the annual Christmas party.
Chellie Cardone updated the club on the 5K event to benefit Wounded Warriors. Stinky Feet in downtown Starkville has donated the bibs and timers. The event will be held April 5th. Sponsors will be labeled as red, white, and blue sponsors based on monetary donation.
Club President Susan Shurden installed Donna McKay as the Club’s vice-president.
Announcements made were the MS Clubwoman magazine would be published electronically this year and the Trunk-or-Treat event, which has officially been named Jack-O-Lantern Jam, will be held Saturday, October 26th in downtown Ackerman.
Program Leader, Marina Loper, presented a program on Equal Exchange/Fair Trade. The Club voted to adopt a project where members would sell items where the trade would receive a 40% profit. The items sold are made by people who would benefit from the organization. Donna McKay led members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Susan Shurden highlighted domestic violence-elder abuse. She also announced that Southern Region President, Ann James, is asking that all members attending convention to bring zip lock bags and socks.
