GOODMAN — Holmes Community College freshman quarterback Jamario Benson had a breakout game for the Bulldogs here Thursday night accounting for 322 of the Bulldogs’ total yards. However, despite his effort the Bulldogs came up short against No. 9 Itawamba 13-10.

Benson finished the game 18-of-32 for 259 yards passing while he added another 63 yards and a touchdown on 33. Holmes had chances to score but two missed field goals and a fumble inside the 10 stopped the scoring drives.

Holmes travels to Mississippi Delta on Thursday night at 7. The game can be heard on the Bulldog Football Radio Network by listening to breezynews.com, 101.1FM, 100.1FM or 103.9FM.

Itawamba got the scoring started in the first quarter when Andrew Goodman found Jaquez McMillian on a 60-yard pass. McMillian came across the middle towards the Bulldog sideline and was untouched until he crossed the goal line. Jeb Millender’s extra point put ICC up 7-0 with 5:17 left in the first. Itawamba scored early in the second quarter when Goodman raced in from the five. The extra point was blocked, leaving ICC with a 13-0 halftime lead.

Holmes got on the scoreboard with 8:10 to play in the game when the ball was snapped over the ICC punter’s head and through the back of the end zone. Holmes moved the ball all the way to the Indian eight yard with the help of three personal foul penalties on Itawamba. A field goal try of 22 yards by Cole Ballard was no good.

Late in the game, the Bulldogs mounted their touchdown drive. A pass interference penalty set the Bulldogs up first and goal from the two. Benson took the snap and went around left end for his first touchdown of the season. Benson then connected with Daniel Huffines for the conversion to make the score 13-10. An onside kick attempt was fielded by ICC, and the Indians ran the clock out from that point.

Leading receivers for the Bulldogs were Alvin Scott with six catches for 100 yards, Shaquan Holmes five catches for 79 and Darreall Joyner with three catches for 49 yards.

Antreon Bennett led the Bulldogs with 13 tackles while Traver Jung had 12. Bennett and Eric Hilton had a sack. Jung had four tackles for loss, Bennett had two tackles for loss while Hilton and Jamison each had one.
