Choctaw County will soon have a Resource Guide to assist area residents. The Guide is a direct result of “Turning the Tide on Poverty.” This is an effort to help Choctaw County take action by working together to explore the causes of poverty and find ways to help families and individuals move from poverty to prosperity. An action committee of concerned volunteers was formed in September, 2012, to generate ideas and gather the necessary information. After many months of work, the Choctaw County Resource Guide is ready for publication.
The Guide provides a database of services and agencies which helps those in need. Contact and specific assistance information is explained. Topics such as accommodations, clubs/organizations, churches, employment assistance, medical/health, ministries, etc., are included.
“We hope this Resource Guide will help people in our area know about places they can go for help,” said Linda Jenkins, chairperson of the action committee. Other committee members who assisted with this project are: Jan Ballard, Kay Blake, Lara Bowman, Deanie Graves, Juli Hughes, Donna McKay, JoAnne Potts, Sarah Stephens, Peggie Turner, and Shirley Wilson.
Also included in the publication is a collection of valuable information for all Choctaw Countians. For example, topics such as where to get a building permit, post office hours, recreation opportunities, and utility companies are provided. The Guide will be a helpful tool for newcomers to Choctaw County as well. Interesting historical facts related to the area and its citizens are included.
Funding sources for the Guide are continuing to be solicited through donations and advertisements. Target date for distribution of the publication will be before the end of the year. A copy will be on display at various sites in the County and can be obtained at the Mississippi Extension Service office and the Chamber of Commerce office.
