Snack donations needed for Adopt-a-Floor Batson program

By Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce

Choctaw County resident April Jones is organizing and leading a drive to collect individual pre-packaged snacks for the Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital. Jones is looking for participation in the “Adopt-a-Floor” program to provide snacks to families whose children must be hospitalized for long periods of time.

This is a new program in which school groups, community organizations, and individuals can join together to provide snacks for the children and family members staying in the hospital.

Parents are not always comfortable leaving their child to go buy lunch or find a snack machine while at the hospital. In addition, to the uncertainty of leaving a child, there is the financial challenge that is incurred with long stays in the hospital and having to purchase food away from the home. Being able to provide a light snack or meal for a parent without them having to leave their child is a small bit of relief during the hospital stay.

Jones learned about the “Adopt-a-Floor” program from a friend whose child spent many months in the hospital. She wants to support the parents and families during a difficult time.

To participate in the “Adopt-a-Floor” program please purchase the following pre-packaged non-refrigerator type of items: crackers, granola, fruit bars, chips, pudding, spaghettio’s, snack cakes, fruit cups, pop-top soups or other pop-top canned items. Microwavable items are acceptable. These items can be dropped off at the Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce until September 13. The Chamber is located in the J.P. Coleman Building on 55 East Quinn Street in Ackerman.

The Choctaw County School District will be participating and helping Jones to collect these items. All students are encouraged to bring these items to school with them during the week of August 26 – 30.

Jones will collect the snacks until September 13 and will then deliver all of them to the Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson.

If you or a community organization would like more details about the “Adopt-a-Floor” program contact Jones between 5 -7 p.m. at 662-285-9279 or the Chamber of Commerce at 662-285-3778.
