The Choctaw County School Board held a special meeting on May 24 where they discussed a variety of topics including summer improvement projects.

Before approving the consent agenda, the board members asked to pull out several items for discussion.

One of those items was to approve the recommendation of Maureen Power as a Special Education Director for 2013-2014 school year. Derek Hunt, School Board member, asked was this position advertised. Michelle Larabee, assistant superintendent, said it was put on the Apple Track system and that a committee interviewed six candidates for this position. She said that Power is very qualified and that her experience as an assistant principal made her a great leader. Hunt then asked if a new assistant principal would have to be found. Larabee said yes.

The board approved Power as Special Education director in a 4-1 vote. Hunt voted against it.

The School Board also discussed the recommendation of Gary Beals as Head Volleyball Coach at CCHS for 2013-2014 SY. Laura Gibbs, School Board Member, asked if anyone could serve as head volleyball coach since Beals is already the head girls and boys’ basketball coach.

Larabee said that all head coaches are at the CCHS campus and that there is no one else. She added that Ms. Reid is an assistant coach and that she is teaching at Weir Elementary.

The board approved Beals as head volleyball coach in a 4-1 vote. Gibbs voted against it.

The board then began a long discussion on suggested district summer improvement projects. Anthony McGee, physical plant director, explained each project at each school and answered questions from the board.

Linda McDaniel, School Board Member, said she would like to tour the schools to see the suggested projects before approving them.

“It’s an awful lot of money. I would like to make rounds,” said McDaniel. Gibbs agreed with her. The board continued with their discussion and to approve a few of the projects one by one. McDaniel and Gibbs voted against three of the four projects before the board voted to table more of the projects until the May 31 meeting.

The board also held an executive session on a student matter.

Superintendent Glen Beard was absent from the meeting.
