AHS announces valedictorian, salutatorian

Ackerman High School recently announced the Class of 2013 Valedictorian as Alison Cooper. She is the daughter of Tom and Jean Cooper.

Alison has served as President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was chosen as Choctaw County’s Distinguished Young Woman 2013. She also received the Choctaw County Distinguished Young Woman 2013 Scholastic Award. While participating in the Mississippi’s Distinguished Young Woman Program, Alison was selected as a Preliminary Fitness Award Winner.

Alison was chosen as Miss AHS, Senior Class Favorite, and Friendliest in the Who’s Who election. She was chosen as Homecoming Queen and was a Campus Beauty. She was an active member of the Chorus, Sextet and Concert Choir. Other activities included Mu Alpha Theta, Academic Team, Annual Staff, Joyce Yates School of Dance, and Methodist Youth Fellowship.

Alison served as Captain of the Varsity Cheerleader Squad and was also chosen as an NCA All American Cheerleader. Being very active in sports, she served as one of the Co-Captains of the Lady Indians Volleyball Team, and was a member of the Lady Indians Softball Team. She was a Lindy Callahan Scholar Athlete Award Nominee, the recipient of the .400 Club Batting Award in softball, and the Cheerleader Captain Award.

Most recently she was chosen as a member of the AHS 2013 Hall of Fame and received the DAR Good Citizenship Award. She was selected as Outstanding Senior Girl and received the United States Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award. She received the Highest Average Award in Advanced Placement English. Alison graduated with Highest Honors.

Alison received the Choctaw County Distinguished Young Woman Scholarship, Choctaw County Distinguished Young Woman Scholastic Scholarship, Mississippi’s DYW Fitness Award Scholarship, Mississippi State University Distinguished Young Woman Scholarship and the Mississippi State University Academic Excellence ACT Scholarship. She will also receive a Mississippi State University Valedictorian Scholarship.

Alison’s future plans include attending Mississippi State University in the fall.

Salutatorian

Ackerman High School recently announced the Class of 2013 Salutatorian as Laiken Toombs. She is the daughter of Robert and Tammy Toombs.

Laiken served as the Senior Representative of the Student Government Association and as an Office Aid. She was a member of the Ackerman High School Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Academic Team, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Laiken was a member of the Ackerman Varsity Cheerleading Squad. She was also an active member of Chorus, Madrigals, and Sextet.

Laiken’s honors include Hall of Fame, 12th Grade Citizenship Award, 2009 and 2011 Cheerleading State Champion, Calculus Highest Average Award, All-American Nominee, All-American Cheerleader, and the Choctaw County Distinguished Young Woman Second Alternate Award.

Laiken received the University of Mississippi Academic Excellence Scholarship, the University of Mississippi Bledsoe Scholarship, the University of Mississippi Salutatorian Scholarship, and the Charles and Bonnie K. Thomas Academic Excellence Scholarship.

Laiken plans to attend the University of Mississippi and the University of Mississippi Medical Center to become a nurse practitioner.

AHS graduation ceremony The Ackerman High School Class of 2013 throws their hats in celebration. Their graduation ceremony was held Friday, May 24, 2013 at the amphitheater.  This is the last class to graduate from Ackerman High School.
