Twentieth Century Club members enjoy presentations by local young authors

The GFWC Ackerman Twentieth Century Club met on Thursday, March 21,
2013 at the Choctaw County Library with 9 members and 38 guests
present. President Susan Shurden called the meeting to order. Due to
the large number of guests in attendance there was a deviation from
the regular order of the meeting. Donna McKay led the group in the
Pledge of Allegiance.

Jo Anne Reid was called on as Program Leader, at which time she
presented the winners of the Poetry & Short Story Writing Contests.
After a time of presentations of the winning pieces by the authors
and presentations of monetary prizes, a brief refreshment time was
enjoyed by all. Jo Anne Reid, along with Belinda Vowell, Marina Loper
and Merle McLeod, served as hostess.

Once the guests had left, President Shurden continued with the
meeting. “Good Things” were shared – mainly DYW & the McLeod’s new
grandson – Graham.

Johnie Power presented a highlight on the upcoming – April 20th– Kids
Fishing Rodeo at Choctaw Lake. Members have been asked to assist
with registration on the day of the event.

Donna McKay provided a display in regards to JuneFest. There are
features that have been added to this years’ event such as a Petting
Zoo, Mechanical Bull, Rock Wall and several other slides. One other
notable change is that Bingo has been moved to 3 pm.

The minutes from the February meeting were read and were approved as
corrected. Correspondence was received from: GFWC 1734 Society; GFWC-
WHRC; MPB; MS Hoby; MS School for the Blind; MS State Hospital;
Operation Smile; Lara Bowman, Chamber of Commerce Director and Susan
Shurden. A Treasurer’s Report was given by Johnie Power. The
Membership prize was won by Chellie Cardone.

The District 2 Convention report was given by Susan as follows: Susan
Shurden was selected as District 2 Clubwoman of the Year. Seventeen
reports were submitted with 10 of these winning awards. There were
10 entries in ‘Youth Art’ with 6 winning awards and 3 of those
advancing to state. All crafts submitted won 1st place awards. 3
photography entries won awards with 1 advancing to state. The club
received 3rd place in the district.

Donna McKay, as Legislation & Public Policy Chairman, provided a
handout of how best to communicate with your legislator.

Community Improvement Project Chairman Donna McKay, issued a
challenge to the membership to help with the ‘matching funds’
campaign at the Choctaw County Animal Shelter. An anonymous donor
has agreed to match up to $2,500 in funds. Donna made a motion that
the club contribute$100. The vote was unanimous to do so. Also, 2
members gave individual contributions of $20 each.

Education Chairman Jo Anne Reid made a motion that the Carol McAdams
Memorial Scholarship be increased to $750. The motion carried & the
vote was unanimous.

Susan Shurden presented a handout – ‘The Definite Dozen’ – which gave
12 ways to remember what is really important to us. Members were
reminded of the April 18th meeting and to seriously consider
attending the MFWC State Convention which will be held in Raymond, MS
April 25-27.
