Fishing Rodeo slated for April 20 at Choctaw Lake

By Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce

The Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce, Farm Bureau Insurance, U.S.
Forest Service and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries
and Parks are partnering together to host a kids fishing rodeo at
Choctaw Lake on Saturday, April 20.

All children in the county ages 15 and under are invited to fish.
Registration will begin at 8 a.m. under the pavilion in the
campground area. A parent or guardian must attend with the child
participating to sign a release waiver. Opening ceremonies will
begin at 9 a.m. with fishing from 9 -11 a.m. Farm Bureau Insurance
will provide lunch for all of the kids.

The fishing rodeo will be held at Cabin Lake, the smaller lake on the
left when entering the campground sites at Choctaw Lake recreation
area. Children are encouraged to bring their own pole and bait for
fishing. There will be catfish with a color tag placed in the lake.
The children who catch a tagged fish will receive a door prize.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks hosts
fishing rodeos throughout the state. In 2012 a total of 57 rodeos
were hosted in Mississippi with over 7,000 children participating.

“The Chamber of Commerce is proud to partner and host the Kids
Fishing Rodeo to encourage use of our county’s natural resources,”
stated Lara Bowman, Chamber of Commerce Director. “There are campers
and hunters from around the Southeast who come to Choctaw Management
Area for recreational purposes and I want to encourage families
locally to do the same.”

Fishing supplies can be purchased locally at Guns and Roses Pawn
Shop, The Hook and Bullet, Leonard’s Three Way and Sullivan’s
Crossroads Grocery.

Volunteers are needed for the day of the event with logistics and to
fish with the children. Door prizes related to fishing and to
promote the outdoors are being sought to award the children who catch
a tagged fish. If you would like to help volunteer or donate a door
prize for this event, please contact the Chamber of Commerce office
at 662-285-3778.
