Selected among several local outstanding youth, Matthew Bennett was selected to compete with other Boys & Girls members for the State of Mississippi Youth of the Year Title and a $1,000 college scholarship from Tupperware Brands Corporation. As the new Youth of the Year of Central MS, 15-year old Bennett is a true example of an extraordinary young man recognized by Boys & Girls Clubs of America for his sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.
Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. As BGCA’s premier youth recognition program, Youth of the Year recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and the Boys & Girls Club, as well as, overcoming personal challenges and obstacles. Youth of the Year encourages Club members to reach their full potential by achieving academic success, leading healthy lifestyles and contributing to their communities.
Youth of the Year honorees are shining examples and living proof that great futures start at Boys & Girls Club.
Bennett, a 10th grade Honor Roll and Perfect Attendance student at Forest Hill High School, Jackson, MS has been a member of the Calvin Walker, Jr. Boys & Girls Club since 2004. He has won numerous awards and recognitions both academically and with community service participation. He was a Top 10 Graduate of his Elementary Class, Outstanding Academic Excellence and Perfect Attendance all 3 years of Middle School, and a member of Future Leaders of America. He is a member of Anderson United Methodist Church’s Usher Ministry, where he has volunteered for the Mission Ministry’s Back to School Drive Supply Drive, and the Angel Tree Christmas for Incarcerated Parents, delivered food to senior citizens at Thanksgiving and Christmas in his grandmother’s hometown of French Camp, MS and winner of the Miller-Coleman-Satterfield Foundation, Inc. Family Heritage Celebration “The Power of a Dream” Poster Contest.
Matthew is the son of Terence and Brenda Miller-Bennett, Jackson, MS. Grandson of Mrs. Gertha Miller, French Camp, MS; Mrs. Mamie Robinson, Jackson, MS and Mr. J.B Sutton of Ridgeland, MS.
