By Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce
The Chamber of Commerce will host the First Responders Dinner on Friday, March 1, at the Choctaw County Community Center in Ackerman, Miss.
Robert Latham, Jr., Director of the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) will be the keynote speaker for the event.
Latham was appointed to serve as the Director of MEMA in January 2012 by Governor Phil Bryant. He previously served as the Director of MEMA from February 2000 until retirement from the agency in June 2006. Upon retirement from MEMA, Latham went to work in the private sector of emergency management after managing the state’s preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation from the worst natural disaster in our nation’s history, Hurricane Katrina.
The Chamber of Commerce sponsors the First Responders Dinner to honor and thank all first responders in the county for their servitude and acts of selflessness for the county’s citizens. First responders in the county include volunteer firefighters, police officers, sheriff deputies, 911 dispatchers, game wardens, highway patrolman and MedStat-EMS staff. All first responders are invited to attend and bring one guest to enjoy a dinner catered by Sonny’s Smokehouse.
District 35 Representative Joey Hood will serve as emcee of the First Responders Dinner. Entertainment for the evening will be provided by Southern Flair Bluegrass Gospel. Southern Flair is made up of a group of students from the French Camp area.
Participants in the Distinguished Young Woman program, Cub Scouts Pack 41 (sponsored by the Ackerman Church of Christ) and students from French Camp Academy are volunteering to serve food to first responders and guests.
