There area basketball teams earned spots in the MHSAA Class 1A playoffs by performing well in the Region 5-1A Tournament last week.
The French Camp and Weir girls were set to host play-in games for the MHSAA South State 1A Tournament on Monday, while the FCA boys were set to entertain a play-in foe on Tuesday.
The Weir girls took a 62-52 win over homestanding FCA in the tourney finals on Friday night to take the Region 5-1A title.
Weir led 11-10 after one quarter and 32-28 at the half, before finally stretching out its lead to the final 10-point margin.
Sonyae McGee-Walker led FCA with 18 points and 20 rebounds, while Moesha Scott had eight points and 10 rebounds and Suna Kuac scored seven points and had seven boards. No stats were reported for Weir.
With the win, the Lady Lions of Weir earned the right to host Mt. Olive, while the FCA girls were set to host Dexter.
The winners of all eight first-round games will advance to the MHSAA Class 1A South State Tournament on Thursday in Bogue Chitto.
The French Camp boys used a 41-point effort from Dre Carter to take a 79-75 win over West Lowndes on Friday to win the region tourney title.
The Panthers trailed 56-49 after three quarters of play, but outscored West Lowndes 30-19 over the last eight minutes to take the thrilling win.
Lamin Sillah scored 15 points for FCA in the win, while Harrison Hilliard had eight and Michael Riley seven. Jesse Hosket led the Panthers in rebounds with eight, while Cortez Johnson had seven. Carter had five steals and four assists for the winners.
French Camp will play host to Resurrection at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. If the Panthers win they will advance to the South State 1A Tournament that will be hosted by either West Lincoln, Dexter, Hartfield Academy or Hinds AHS. That will be determined by Tuesday’s action. If West Lincoln wins its Tuesday night home game against Pelahatchie, it will be the host team.
