County Relay for Life plans underway

From press reports

Are you a cancer survivor or do you have a loved one who has battled cancer? The American Cancer Society wants to host a Relay for Life in Choctaw County on Saturday, April 6, 2013 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. to raise awareness and support for the fight against cancer. Relay for Life will honor all survivors of cancer within the county and honor those who lost the battle.

An organizational meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 9, at 10 a.m. at the Choctaw County Community Center. If you would like to volunteer and become a part of the planning team for Choctaw County’s Relay for Life, please make plans to attend.

Christin Waters a Community Representative from the American Cancer Society will be on hand to lead and guide the meeting. Waters will work with volunteers to plan Relay for Life and gather support from the local community. She assists counties throughout the central region of the state in executing Relay for Life events.

“Relay for Life is a great event for communities to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society,” stated Lauren Williams Hospital Administrator for Pioneer Community Hospital of Choctaw. “I would like to see the community embrace Relay for Life and this become a yearly event,” added Williams.

Relay for Life events can be tailored to fit the needs of an individual community. With this being the first Relay for Life held in Choctaw County in many years a smaller four hour event during the day is being planned. The event will kick off with a survivor’s walk honoring all Choctaw County citizens who have survived cancer. A luminary ceremony will be held to remember loved ones who were lost to cancer or to honor those who are continuing to fight cancer.

Dedicated teams will have tents set up at Relay for Life offering food and games to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Teams can consist of family members, employees, church members, school groups or any other group of individuals who want to join together. The team who raises the most money is rewarded for their hard work and participation.

“The success of Relay for Life is attributed to participation from the community. This event will not only raise funds for the American Cancer Society, but provide a great family atmosphere for citizens of the county,” stated Lara Bowman, Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce Director. “This is an event for all ages to participate and contribute toward a great cause,” stated Bowman.
