Charlotte Nona Embry Nowlin
Charlotte Nona Embry Nowlin, 87, of Cordova died peacefully December 11, 2012 in her daughter’s home surrounded by loved ones. She was born August 2, 1925 in Blodgett, Missouri and grew up in Piggott, Arkansas. It was near Piggott that she held her first job after college, teaching 8 grades in a one-room schoolhouse. Afterwards, she moved to Memphis where she met and married her late husband, John David Nowlin, Jr., and they began their family. For the next 14 years she worked as a stay-at-home Mom, a job she dearly loved! When her youngest was 5, she began working outside the home, first as a teacher in the Head Start program. In 1973 she returned to college to fulfill a life-long dream of completing her Elementary Education degree. Graduating at 48, she taught at Weir Attendance Center, Weir, MS for the next 18 years. Upon retirement she moved to Cordova to be near her children. Here she enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, working in her yard and being actively involved in water aerobics, Community Bible Study, Central Church and her Sunday School class, the Ambassadors. Mrs. Nowlin was known for her sense of humor, amazing memory, prolific letter writing, and appreciation for even life’s smallest blessings. A wonderful Mom, devoted wife and friend, she will be greatly missed.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Doris and Bradley Embry; and her brother, Neil Embry.
She is survived by her children, Mary Virginia Bailey, Wade Hampton Nowlin II (Wanda), Charlotte Nowlin Lee (Jim), Linda Nowlin Tichenor (David), George Watkins Nowlin (Brenda), and John David Nowlin III (Kate); 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a host of other family members and dear friends.
There will be a graveside service at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Poplar Ave. in Memphis.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be sent to Central Church, Collierville, TN or Calvary Rescue Mission, Memphis, TN. PAID OBITUARY
