Christmas Parade Dec. 6, Entry deadline Nov. 30 The Town of Ackerman would like to announce plans for the 2012 Christmas Parade. This year’s theme will be A Picture Perfect Christmas. Weir Flea Market December 1 A Flea Market will be held on Front Street in Weir Saturday, December 1 from 7 a.m.-2 p.m.. There is no vendor fee. Applications are available at the Choctaw County Extension Office, Broken Wings Ministry and Weir Town Hall. You may also email jhughes@ext.msstate.edu. The flea market is sponsored by the MSU Extension Service’s Turning the Tide on Poverty project/Buy Local action team. For more information, contact Joanne Potts at 662-418-7728.

Yarn Spinners Book Club Dec. 4 Yarn Spinners Book Club meets at the Choctaw County Extension Office at 10:30-12:00 on the 1st Tuesday of each month. Participants take turns choosing which books to read, so there is a wide variety of subjects; some fiction, some non-fiction. Because Holiday preparations and events can be so hectic this time of year, on December 4th participants will share a little about one of their favorite books. VFW meeting Dec. 7 Attention: The monthly VFW meeting was been changed to Friday, December 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Pap’s Place instead of Thursday.

Christmas Brunch Dec. 8 Celebrate the Season at a Christmas Brunch on December 8th from 9am-11am at the Community Center in Ackerman. Come enjoy the beautiful tablescapes delicious dishes and door prizes to be given away. Vendors will be on hand so plan to shop for Christmas. Special music will be provided and you don’t want to miss the featured speaker – Rita Sweatt. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased from any club member. This event is hosted by GFWC Ackerman Twentieth Century Club.

Christmas Parade in Weir Dec. 11 “Christmas in My Hometown” is the theme of the 2012 Christmas Parade in Weir. The parade will be Tuesday, December 11 at 6 p.m. All churches, organizations, and individuals are invited to march or ride in the parade. Christmas trees needed for Holiday Open House Christmas trees needed for Holiday Open House on Thursday, December 13 at the Choctaw County Library. We would like school groups, church groups, businesses and other organizations in the county to decorate Christmas trees. Each group is responsible for securing their own tree, live or artificial. We ask that no food items or glitter be used in decorations. Trees must be up by December 12 at noon. A Peoples’ Choice Award will be given again this year. Pack-The-Trailer for Broken Wings Dec. 13 Help us pack a 12′ trailer full of food for Broken Wings Ministry! This Pack-The-Trailer event is Thursday, December 13 from 2:30 until 6 pm at the Choctaw County Library. It is part of the WTVA Food for Families Food Drive which was started years ago by Kay Bain. Last year, 3,647 pounds of food was donated to Broken Wings and we hope to increase that number this year. 12 Days of Christmas Extravaganza Dec. 13 The Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce will host the 12 Days of Christmas Extravaganza on Thursday, December 13th from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. at participating businesses. Visit participating businesses to enter your name for a large door prize. For more information contact the Chamber of Commerce at 285-3778.

Full Circle Knitting/Crocheting Group Location: Choctaw County Extension Office Full Circle Knitting/Crocheting group meets every Tuesday from 9 a.m.- Noon. Beginners through experts are invited to attend. Bring your needles and yarn. Want to help out with a community service project, but can’t attend? Contact us at 285-6337 for other ways you can help.

Christmas Sale Dec. 1 Come join us for a cup of coffee or hot cider and shop for delicious home baked goodies and handmade craft items for Christmas gifts. The sale is set for Saturday, December 1, 8 am – noon, in the Fellowship Hall of the Mathiston United Methodist Church in Mathiston on Hwy 15. This event is sponsored by the United Methodist Women.

Christmas Decorating-Lighting Contest Judging Dec. 17-18 Twentieth Century Club is sponsoring a “Christmas Decorating-Lighting Contest” for homes in the town limits of Ackerman. The categories are “Best Door” and “Best Overall House.” Judging will take place on December 17-18 beginning at 6 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the date may be moved to later in the week. End of Year Fund States Drive Dec. 30 Millspring M.B.C. of Weir will be having their Annual End of the Year Building Fund States Drive. This event will take place on December 30 at 3 p.m. Our theme for this event will be “Moving Forward and Not Looking Back.” Our guest speaker for this great event will be Rev. James Covington, Pastor of Mt. Olivet M.B. Church of Starkville. Mt. Olivet Choir will be rendering Song Service on this day. Come out and help us celebrate what the Lord Jesus Christ is doing at Millspring M.B.C. where Dr. Vincent Coleman is our Pastor.

Master Gardner training classes planned Master Gardener Certification training classes will begin in February. Classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 1– 5 pm February 12 through March 19. The final exam is take home, open book and participants may work on it by themselves or together. Cost is $85 which includes training notebook and materials, one year membership in the Mississippi Master Gardener Association and refreshments. The Master Gardener program is an Extension public service program. Registration fee and application are due at the Choctaw County Extension Office by January 25, 2013.
