French Camp continues in playoffs

After a 42-6 win over the Coldwater Cougars in the first round of the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 1A playoffs, the French Camp Panthers are hitting the road to Greenville for the second time this season.

The Panthers have continued a winning streak this year extending to eight consecutive games. French Camp has outscored their opponents 329-34 in their last eight games and is averaging 38 points per game this year.

The division champion Panthers played host to Region 1, No. 4 Coldwater and set the tone early in the game in hopes of prolonging their season.

French Camp struck in the first quarter when quarterback Jesse Hosket found Ben Hosket with a 40-yard pass. Junior kicker Sam Gould added the extra point. The Panthers gained an early lead over the Cougars, 7-0.

French Camp continued to overpower the Cougars on both sides of the ball, and quickly double their lead in the first quarter. Hagan Box made a 16-yard dash to the end zone. Gould followed with the extra point increasing French Camp’s lead, 14-0.

Senior running back Jaylon Clemons put the Panthers on the board again before halftime after a nine-yard rumble. Gould accompanied Clemons’ touchdown run with the extra point.

French Camp took a lead of 21 unanswered points over Coldwater into halftime.

After the half, the Panther ground assault carried over into the third quarter.

Daniel Hughes increased the Cougar deficit in the second half with a run from 11 yards out.

In the fourth quarter, the Hosket and Hosket duo hit again. Jesse Hosket connected with Ben Hosket on a seven-yard touchdown pass.

The Cougars managed to prevent themselves from being another victim of a Panther shut out late in the second half. Quarterback Marcel Newson made a 14-yard touchdown run.

Coldwater continued to trail, 35-6.

Hughes added another touchdown to cap the French Camp scoring with a 13-yard run.

Gould added all extra points in the second half and was 6-6 for point- after-touchdowns adding a total of six points for the Panthers. Gould has kicked 40 extra points this season and 10 successful field goals totaling 70 points so far this year averaging 6 points a game.

On the offensive side of the ball, Clemons led the rushing attack with 13 carries for 114 yards with one touchdown. Hughes followed with six carries for 57 yards with two touchdowns.

Jesse Hosket had nine carries for 25 yards while Box had one carry for 16 yards with one touchdown. Dylan Dickey had one carry for seven yards.

Jesse Hosket was 7-10 through the air for 106 yards with two touchdowns.

Ben Hosket had four receptions for 49 yards with two touchdowns. Box had two receptions for 36 yards while Lovondra Carter had one reception for 21 yards.

Defensively, Ben Hosket led with 13 stops. Jevante McAdory and Cortez Johnson had eight stops each while Dickey had seven. Carter had six stops while Douglas Hughes, Daniel Hughes and Jesse Hosket had five stops each.

Johnson had one sack for a loss of four yards. Box had two interceptions returned for 38 yards while Daniel Hughes had one fumble recovery.

French Camp will enter Friday’s matchup with the St. Joseph Fighting Irish with a 9-2 overall record.

The Fighting Irish, Region 2, No. 3, pulled a playoff upset last week with a 38-6 win over Smithville.

The game will be a Region 2 rematch from earlier this season. In their previous contest, French Camp shut out St. Joseph, 30-0.

Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. in Greenville.
