In downtown Ackerman on November 13 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Community Counseling Services invites the public to experience the effects aging, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease have on the body. The Virtual Dementia Trailer Tour will stop in Ackerman on Tuesday, November 13. It will be located across from City Hall at the Pavilion, 45 East Main Street, Ackerman from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
For every person with Alzheimer’s there is often at least one other person who directly cares for them and a host of healthcare, social workers, advocates and volunteers in the background. With so many people directly and indirectly affected by Alzheimer’s it is good that a time of year be set aside to promote awareness.
As you prepare to go through the Dementia Trailer, CCS staffers will fill your shoes with corn mimicking the loss of balance or possibly a bad hip or knee. Plastic gloves full of corn kernels are worn on the hands so one feels the effects of arthritis and loss of coordination and strength. Swim goggles tinted yellow simulate how our vision yellows with age and the black dot in the center represents the presence of cataracts. The participant wears headphones that blast loud static which in turn compromise hearing. Once suited up, staffers take you into the actual Dementia Trailer where you are given 5 simple task to accomplish; it is absolutely amazing how difficult household chores become, the quick rise in stress, and how hard simple directions can be to comprehend due to all the previously mentioned impairments. The entire experience takes a total of 5 minutes.
