The French Camp Panthers secured the Class 1A, Region 2, District 3 title last Friday night with a 42-8 win over the Durant Tigers.
This is the seventh consecutive win for the Panthers this season.
French Camp has dominated their opponents throughout district play on both sides of the ball and their Friday matchup with the Tigers proved to be no exception.
The Panthers took control of the ball in the first half of the game adding a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter and again in the second quarter. French Camp defenders helped ensure their team’s lead by quieting the Durant offense for most of the game.
The first scoring play for the Panthers occurred in the first quarter with a 10-yard run by junior quarterback Jesse Hosket. Sam Gould added the extra point, and the Panthers had an early 7-0 lead.
Minutes later the French Camp offense struck again. Hosket found junior Hagan Box with a 41-yard pass. After the extra point provided by Gould, the Panthers had a 14-0 lead that would carry over into the second quarter.
The French Camp offense began picking up steam again in the second quarter. The Panthers moved the ball down the field and Daniel Hughes punched it in from the one-yard line.
Later in the second quarter, senior running back Jaylon Clemons made a 10-yard rumble adding another Panther touchdown.
Gould added both extra points in the second quarter. French Camp possessed a 28-0 advantage going into halftime.
Clemons continued to score for the Panthers in the third quarter. Pushing through Tiger defenders, Clemons landed in the end zone from one yard out.
Senior Lovondra Carter capped the French Camp win in the fourth quarter returning a Durant punt 14 yards.
The hosting team would not be allowed to answer back until the fourth quarter, but it would not affect the final result of the game.
Gould added both extra points in the second half of the game, and was 6-6 for points-after-touchdowns.
Clemons led the rushing attack with 11 carries for 96 yards with two touchdowns. Hosket had five carries for 50 yards with one touchdown while Luke McKnight had two carries for 21 yards. Box had one carry for 18 yards.
Hosket was 3-9 through the air for 61 yards with one touchdown.
Box had one reception for 41 yards with one touchdown, while Carter had two receptions for 23 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Hughes led with eight stops. Ben Hosket had seven stops and one sack. Jevante McAdory had five stops. Hunter McKnight and Andrew Stevens had one sack each.
The Panthers will have an open week before the first round of Class 1A playoffs on Friday, November 9. French Camp will enter the matchup with an 8-2 overall record and a 7-0 record in district play.
French Camp will host the Coldwater Cougars next Friday night. The Cougars (6-4, 4-3) clinched a spot in the playoffs last Friday with a 38-6 win over Biggersville taking the fourth seed of Region 1. The Cougars will finish their regular season this week hosting Houlka.
All first, second and third round playoff games have a 7:00 p.m. kickoff set by the Mississippi High School Activities Association.
