The Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce will host their annual reception on Thursday, October 25 at 6 p.m. The reception will be held at the Community Center in Ackerman.
At the reception, the Choctaw County Economic Development District will celebrate 25 years of service to Choctaw County. Tickets for the reception must be purchased by Friday, October 19, at the Chamber of Commerce office located at 55 East Quinn in Ackerman, (across from the courthouse in the J.P. Coleman Building). Tickets are $10 for Chamber of Commerce members and $12 for future members of the Chamber of Commerce.
On May 4, 1987, the Board of Supervisors passed a resolution establishing the Choctaw County Economic Development District. The Board of Supervisors appointed eleven Trustees to the District. The first Executive Director of the Choctaw Economic Development District was Billy Walton.
Walton will address attendees at the Chamber of Commerce reception to share history and insight on the development of the organization. Walton recalled the first meeting of the Economic Development District was held in French Camp, with former Governor J.P. Coleman and Governor Ray Mabus in attendance.
Nick Walters, Executive Director of Economic Development for Choctaw County, will give attendees of the reception an update on the future of economic development in the county. Choctaw County recently joined the Regional Economic Partnership with Webster and Montgomery counties to consolidate resources and efforts.
From the formation of the Choctaw County Economic Development District came the Choctaw County Economic Development Foundation. The Choctaw County Economic Development Foundation is served duly by the eleven Trustees from the District along with six additional individuals. These individuals are members of the Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce. They are elected to serve on the Foundation at the annual meeting held each spring.
When a business or individual joins the Chamber of Commerce they become a dual member of the Choctaw County Economic Development Foundation. Individual dues for the Chamber of Commerce are $25 with dues for a business ranging from $100 to $500.
The Chamber of Commerce serves the Choctaw County Economic Development Foundation by carrying out activities that promote the community, enhancing commercial opportunities for Choctaw County businesses and encouraging local citizens to shop within Choctaw County.
Lara Bowman, Executive Director of the Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce, will share with attendees the importance of developing and growing a Chamber of Commerce in Choctaw County and the role the organization has within the Economic Development Foundation.
