Time for the Third Annual Scarecrow Contest

The Choctaw County Master Gardeners invite you to enter our 3rd Annual Scarecrow Contest! To celebrate the 2012 fall season, we would like for Choctaw County businesses, clubs, school groups, church groups, non-profit groups and individuals to create a Scarecrow. Scarecrows will be exhibited at the walking track in downtown Ackerman. Entries should be turned in at the walking track (Main Street, Ackerman) Tuesday, October 16 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. Scarecrows will be on exhibit through November 1.

Rules/Guidelines for Scarecrows: -Scarecrows may be made by youth or adults. -Individuals/groups may enter more than one scarecrow. -Scarecrows should be family-friendly – No bloody, gory or lewd entries will be accepted. -Scarecrows will be displayed outside and should be between 3’ and 6’ in height. -Scarecrows may be sitting (must provide own hay bale, chair, etc) or may be free standing and self-supporting. Participant must provide their own props/frame/support. Only the small, square hay bales may be used – no large round bales. -Mississippi State University Extension Service, Master Gardeners and Town of Ackerman will not be held liable for theft, loss or damage to items entered. -By entering the contest, entrants agree that their name, photo and item(s) entered may be publicized in media sources (newspapers, newsletters, online, etc).

-Scarecrows should be removed from Walking Track area November 1. Ideas for Scarecrows include but are not limited to: Traditional Harvest Figure, Humorous Scarecrows (inspired by storybook characters, cartoon figures, crazy characters, etc.), Celebrity Scarecrows (scarecrow that depicts a real person such as TV star, famous historical figure, book character) and Green Scarecrows (made from recycled materials).

A trophy and certificate will be awarded for the Most Creative Scarecrow and the People’s Choice Award.
