County tax levy set with no tax increase

The Choctaw County tax levy was set with no tax increase for the 2012-2013 fiscal year.

In the August 31 meeting, the Choctaw County Board of Supervisors approved a millage rate of 79.09 which is the same as last year. The amount of mills in some categories changed from the year before but did not change the total millage rate. Also included that millage rate us .61 mil for the school shortfall from the 2011-2013 fiscal year.

The millage rate of 79.09 mils includes taxes for Choctaw County, the Choctaw County School District and Holmes Community College.

According to the 2013-2013 budget, 1 mil equals $56,587.

The county’s levied taxes are 40.97 mils that will bring in approximately $4,473,884.

The supervisors included .61 mil for the shortfall to the school district from the 2011-2012 fiscal year to the total millage. The .61 mil will bring in $34,604.01 to fund the shortfall.

The Choctaw County School District’s total levied taxes are 37.51 mils that will bring in $2,121,563.86

Holmes Community College receives tax funds from 2 mils of $113,134.

The approved tax levy includes: General Fund purposes: 26.36 mils which equals to $1,491,318.13 This fund includes office administration, judicial and law enforcement, operations and maintenance of buildings and grounds, support and upkeep of Choctaw County Library, maintenance, support and operation of Choctaw County Hospital, budgets of Tax Assessor/ Collector, Sheriff’s Office and the remodeling, building or repairing the Courthouse, Jail and other buildings and more.

Volunteer Fire: 0.73 mils This fund will receive $41,430 from the tax levy. This fund is for expenses to help provide fire protection to the county.

Road Maintenance: 10.88 mils This is each supervisor’s road and bridge fund. It will receive $615,267 from the tax levy that will be divided into the five road funds.

School Shortfall: .61 mil This $34,604.01 will fund the short fall from the county to the school district from the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

Choctaw County School District: 34.81 mils This fund will receive $1,969,075.71 to the Choctaw County School District to use where needed as the School Board approves.

Choctaw County School District bond note: 2.70 mils

The CCSD will receive $152,488.15 for short term debt service.

Reappraisal: 1 mil This $56.567 will pay the property appraiser for looking for improvements and to update and maintain county maps.

Maintenance and support of Holmes Junior College: 1 mil which is $56,567.

Expansion of Holmes Junior College: 1 mil which is $56,567.
