When you hear the words “yarn drive”, what first comes to mind? Probably not a yarn covered bus or tank or car or bicycle! That’s not what Full Circle is planning (those would come under the topic Yarn Bombing and that’s a whole other story).
For over three years, Full Circle Knitting/Crochet group has been making hats, blankets, prayer shawls, scarves, toys, walker bags and cowls for people in Mississippi who might need a little comfort and warmth. Items have been given to the Choctaw County Nursing Center, Oktibbeha County Hospital Dialysis Unit, The Children’s Hospital in Jackson, the women’s abuse shelter in Columbus, and local individuals. Not everyone who would like to is physically able to come to the Extension Service Office in Ackerman to knit or crochet on Tuesday mornings between 9 a.m.-noon. Not everyone has the means to purchase yarn to use. Not everyone has the talent or desire or patience to knit or crochet lap robes and scarves. But, if we can match up yarn with willing hands, we can possibly keep a number of people warmer this year.
And to this end, Full Circle will be having a Yarn Drive to help the group produce many more items.
1) If you have a yarn stash that you will never use, please consider giving it to our group. 2) If you would like to purchase yarn to donate, please purchase at a minimum 600 yds (usually between 3 – 5 skeins) of the same color/dye lot of the following yarns for example, or any other soft, washable yarn: – Caron’s Simply Soft – Lionbrand Homespun – Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn – Red Heart’s Soft or With Love
Beginning in September, yarn may be dropped off at the Choctaw County Extension Office (Courthouse Annex) in Ackerman, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m.-noon and 1 p.m.-5p.m.
Keep in mind that items are made for men, women and children, so any colors will be appropriate. Put yourself in the place of the person receiving a handmade blanket or scarf. What would you like? What would keep you warm and be soft? What would comfort you and make you smile?
Thank you to the many individuals who have already donated yarn and supplies to Full Circle. There is no funding for this group and members have been donating their own yarn and time for over three and a half years now. Who knows, your generosity may eventually help you or someone you love?
