With mixed expectations for the Weir Lions football program this year, the team made a huge statement in their season opener in thrilling fashion by defeating the JZ George Jaguars 21-20.
The first quarter began with the Jaguars getting on the scoreboard first with a 69-yard kickoff return on the first play of the game. JZ George would attempt a two-point conversion, but it failed and left the score 6-0. Neither team would score for the rest of the quarter.
The Lions would not find the scoreboard until the second quarter when senior quarterback Tyler Henson ran into the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown run. The Lions would take the lead with the PAT by Tyler “T.Y.” Martin. The score would be 7-6 going into halftime.
Weir would get the momentum at the beginning of the third quarter when Darius Brown returned the initial kickoff 78 yards for another Lions touchdown. The Jaguars would answer back later in the quarter with a 16-yard run to get back into the game. Their PAT was no good, leaving the score 14-12 going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Henson would score his second rushing touchdown of the night with a 1-yard run to increase the Lions’ lead. The PAT was good, making the score 21-12. The Jaguars would score their final touchdown of the game and convert a two-point conversion, making the final score 21-20.
On offense for the Lions, Henson was 1 of 3 in pass completions for 8 yards. He also had seven carries for 38 yards rushing to go with his two rushing touchdowns.
In the backfield, senior Willie Miller led the team in rushing with only 6 carries for 56 yards. Senior Darius Brown had 12 carries for 35 yards, and scored one touchdown. Junior Kavon Dobbs also contributed with 12 carries for 36 yards.
Weir will face off against in-county rival French Camp this upcoming Friday. Their last meeting was last season, with the Panthers defeating the Lions 46-25. Kickoff for this game will be at 7:30 p.m. at Weir.
