Coaching changes for schools in the district

With the restructuring of the Choctaw County School District on hold for the time being, it not only affected the academics of the schools, it also affected the sports of the schools as well.

The plans of restructuring had left the state of the Weir Attendance Center football team in somewhat of a standstill, as the school district waited on receiving word from the Department of Justice to see if restructuring would occur this upcoming school year (the school district recently found out they would not restructure this upcoming school year).

During the Choctaw County School Board meeting on July 2, it was announced that Weir Attendance Center Head Football Coach Danya Turner would be resigning. The members of the board then discussed Assistant Coach Paul Courtney being named Head Coach and to fill the vacant Athletic Director position left by Turner. The rest of the coaching staff will remain unchanged.

The board members also discussed the state of the Weir football team. At the time of the school board meeting it was not clear if the school would have enough players for the team. If they did not have enough players, the district would have to contact the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) to discuss their options as to what course of action would need to be taken.

During the week, however, it was confirmed that the school would try to have a team this upcoming season. Courtney is very positive of fielding a team with such little notice.

“The plan is to have a team,” Courtney said. “We will have very few numbers. We are looking at only 15 or 16 players. We are going to do the very best we can do to put a team on the field.”

Courtney will also be adjusting to his new roles at the school while trying to prepare for the upcoming season. “I think the biggest difference for me are the things that come along with being the athletic director, as far as the paperwork side of it and making sure everything runs smoothly,” Courtney said. “As far as being a head coach, you have a lot of responsibilities. You have a lot of guys under you, as far as assistants and players. You also have to be responsible for the whole program.”

Also discussed by the board were the supplements for the coaches at Weir. The supplements will be contingent on whether or not Weir Attendance Center has a football team next year. With the announcement of Weir having a football team this year, supplements for coaches should be provided.

Also resigning was Ackerman High School Head Baseball Coach Brad Mitchell. Mitchell will now take his coaching talents to Eupora Attendance Center to be their new head baseball coach. The Indians finished last season 7-15 overall and 3-5 in division play.

In other coaching news, Miranda Reid was hired by Weir Attendance Center as a coach and high school English teacher. Weir Attendance Center also hired Carolyn Stevens as a coach as well as a high school math teacher.
