The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), together with the Mississippi Transportation Commission, recently awarded 21 scholarships to deserving students attending a Mississippi community college and seeking a transportation-related career.
Jonathan Moore of Starkville, Miss., graduate of Ackerman High School is one of this year’s MDOT/SASHTO scholarship recipients. He is currently enrolled at East Mississippi Community College where he will pursue a degree in Engineering. Jonathan is the son of Lonnie Moore who works in MDOT’s District One Construction Office.
The funds became available through the Southeastern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (SASHTO), a consortium of the 12 southeastern state transportation departments. In addition to the academic requirements, successful scholarship candidates were also required to demonstrate strong civic involvement. The Mississippi Transportation Commission wanted to know that these students were interested in seeing positive changes in the state, and their involvement in local civic activities demonstrates that desire. These students are tomorrow’s transportation professionals.
“MDOT’s goal, along with the SASHTO Scholarship program, is to strongly encourage today’s brightest young minds to pursue fields of study that will prepare them for careers in transportation,” said Northern District Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert. “It is gratifying to know that, through this program, we are able to help these students pursue their dreams.”
