Choctaw County Farmers Market Registration deadline May 18 The newly organized Choctaw County Farmers Market will kick off Saturday, June 9 at JuneFest in Ackerman! Then, the market will be open June 22, July 13 & 27, August 10 & 24 from 3 pm-7 pm. Location will be at the downtown walking track at the corner of Main Street and Commerce Street in Ackerman. Anyone wishing to sell fruits and/or vegetables at the farmers market should contact Juli Hughes, County Director, at the Choctaw County Extension Office at 285-6337 (or email jhughes@ext.msstate.edu). Vendor registration is needed by May 18 to sell at JuneFest. There is no fee to sell fruits or vegetables. As part of our Turning the Tide on Poverty project, we are excited about this new venture.

Revival Maben Church of God May 20-22 Maben Church of God is having a Revival on Sunday, May 20 at 5 p.m. and May 21-22 at 7 p.m. Pastor James McElroy of Grenada Church of God. Holy Ghost preaching, singing, fellowship, all are invited. Church located on the Maben, Starkville Rd or Crowley Dr. Pastor at Maben Church of God is Rev. Kerry Collins.

Memorial Service at Salem United Methodist Church May 20 The annual Memorial Service at the Salem United Methodist Church, Chester, will be held on Sunday, May 20 at 11AM. Casey “Buddy” Smith, Jr. will be the speaker. Buddy has served as an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church for 38 years. He is currently the Executive Vice President of American Family Association and American Family Radio. Over the past 18 years Buddy has worked at AFA in the battle to restore America’s biblical foundations and to protect families from the immorality that threatens to rob our children of their future. It is with great anticipation we look forward to hearing the message of one of our own, born and raised in the Ackerman area. Our musicians, Sam Griffin from Ackerman and Kellie Ray from Mantee, are both talented and well grounded in the Christian faith. Their testimony in music will only add to the spiritual excitement we can expect from this service. All are welcome to attend this special, most holy and reverent occasion.

Memorial Services May 20, 10:30 a.m. The Salem Independent Methodist Church annual Memorial Services will be held on May 20 at 10:30 a.m. Salem Church is located two miles west of Chester just off Hwy 415. There will be singing during the morning worship service. No singing in the afternoon. Our Memorial speaker will be Pastor Jim Reed. Dinner on the grounds will be served at noon.

Youth Grilling Workshop May 24 Safety Sam says Don’t Barf – play it safe with your grill this summer! Youth ages 8-16 interested in learning how to grill have the opportunity to attend a workshop Thursday, May 24 from 10 am-1 pm at the Choctaw County Extension Office. Participants will also learn about food preparation and food safety and get to sample shishkebobs. Pam Awad, Nutrition Educator, will conduct the workshop. There is no fee. Dobbs Reunion May 26 The 14th Annual DOBBS REUNION will be held on Saturday, May 26th, at the home of Ron and Betty Bennett near Weir beginning at 10am.If you are a DOBBS, descended from any DOBBS line, married a DOBBS, went to school or church with a DOBBS, were a neighbor…come on out and join us for a day of fun, food, and fellowship. We would love to hear your stories and memories of the DOBBS family and growing up in Choctaw County. McAdams & Dudley Reunion June 2 The McAdams & Dudley Reunion will be June 2 at the Sherwood Community Center, 5 miles south of Mathiston. All families and friends are invited to come, bring a dish, and enjoy the day together.

Drivers Ed class to be offered this summer June 4-29 Drivers Education will be offered at Ackerman High School this summer from June 4-June 29 from 10 am to 1 pm daily. The class will be available to students in grades 9-12, and each student who completes the class will earn 1/2 credit towards graduation. The cost of the class is $150. Full Circle Knitting/Crocheting Group Location: Choctaw County Extension Office Full Circle Knitting/Crocheting group meets every Tuesday from 9 a.m.- Noon. Beginners through experts are invited to attend. Bring your needles and yarn. Want to help out with a community service project, but can’t attend? Contact us at 285-6337 for other ways you can help.

Memorial Service May 27 Clear Springs Baptist Church would like to invite everyone to their Memorial Service on Sunday, May 27 at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will follow in the Fellowship building.

Homecoming Services June 3 Homecoming services at Mt. Airy Church will be held Sunday, June 3. A short business meeting will be held at 10:45 a.m. The worship service begins at 11 a.m. followed with a fellowship lunch. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy the day.

Bethel Memorial The annual memorial service at Bethel Methodist Church will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Sunday May 27, 2012. The church is located on Sharp Road in southwestern Oktibbeha County, one mile east of Choctaw County and one-fourth mile north of Winston County. The service will be conducted by Danny Cheatham, a lay speaker from Gum Branch Baptist Church. This is the only scheduled event held at the old country church.

Celebrate Homeownership To celebrate June as being National Homeownership month the Starkville Rural Development local office will host an open house on Tuesday, June 12th in the USDA Service Center (located at 510 Hwy 25 N., Starkville, from 9:00am until 2:00pm.
