Graduation Celebration for Choctaw County Seniors May 10 The Choctaw County Alumni Association will be honoring all seniors in Choctaw County, Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 6 p.m at the Choctaw County Community Center, located at 895 College Street in Ackerman. Gospel Singing May 12, 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come to a gospel singing at Sherwood Community Center on May 12 at 7 p.m. The event will feature performances from “Leap of Faith”, Linda Odom, “Joyful Noise” of Greenwood, and “The Crouch’s”. Admission is free but a love offering will be received for groups. Concessions will be available. Join us for a great night of gospel singing, food, & fellowship. Greensboro Historical Marker dedication May 12 Old Choctaw County Chapter, NSDAR, cordially invites everyone to a dedication ceremony for a historical marker at Greensboro, the first county seat of the original Choctaw County, thus giving our chapter it’s name. The town of Greensboro disappeared long ago leaving behind a cemetery and colorful history to mark its passing. The ceremony will be held at the newly constructed Chapel at Greensboro Cemetery on Saturday, May 12 at 1:30 pm.

French Camp Pioneer Day May 12 Features square dancing, artists, craft demonstrators, pony rides, crosscut saw competition, petting zoo, self-guided boardwalk tours, and door prizes. Bluegrass concert at 1:30 with Southern Flair, The Russell Burton Family, Uncle Pug’s Bluegrass Band, and special guest, Alan Sibley.

American Legion Meeting May 14 The American Legion Post 82 and Auxiliary will meet May 14 at the American Legion Building in Ackerman. A fish fry meal will begin at 6 p.m. with the meeting at 6:30 p.m. Plans for observance of Memorial Day on May 28 will be made at this meeting. All members and their family are invited to attend. Concert May 14 Weir Attendance Center will be having a Spring Concert on Monday, May 14 at 6 PM. Admittance is $2. All proceeds go toward purchasing music and sound equipment for the school music program.

Choctaw County Farmers Market Registration deadline May 18 The newly organized Choctaw County Farmers Market will kick off Saturday, June 9 at JuneFest in Ackerman! Then, the market will be open June 22, July 13 & 27, August 10 & 24 from 3 pm-7 pm. Location will be at the downtown walking track at the corner of Main Street and Commerce Street in Ackerman. Anyone wishing to sell fruits and/or vegetables at the farmers market should contact Juli Hughes, County Director, at the Choctaw County Extension Office at 285-6337 (or email jhughes@ext.msstate.edu). Vendor registration is needed by May 18 to sell at JuneFest. There is no fee to sell fruits or vegetables. As part of our Turning the Tide on Poverty project, we are excited about this new venture.

Memorial Services May 20, 10:30 a.m. The Salem Independent Methodist Church annual Memorial Services will be held on May 20 at 10:30 a.m. Salem Church is located two miles west of Chester just off Hwy 415. There will be singing during the morning worship service. No singing in the afternoon. Our Memorial speaker will be Pastor Jim Reed. Dinner on the grounds will be served at noon.

Dobbs Reunion May 26 The 14th Annual DOBBS REUNION will be held on Saturday, May 26th, at the home of Ron and Betty Bennett near Weir beginning at 10am.If you are a DOBBS, descended from any DOBBS line, married a DOBBS, went to school or church with a DOBBS, were a neighbor…come on out and join us for a day of fun, food, and fellowship. We would love to hear your stories and memories of the DOBBS family and growing up in Choctaw County. Full Circle Knitting/Crocheting Group Location: Choctaw County Extension Office Full Circle Knitting/Crocheting group meets every Tuesday from 9 a.m.- Noon.
